Sports Photo Academy was created by Gunnar Mattiasson.

Gunnar is a sports photographer, educator and coach with many years of experience around sport, learning and performance. His work has taken him from local fields and club environments to international rugby tournaments, national teams and published sports photography.

But this academy is not built on the idea that beginners need someone to impress them. It is built on the idea that beginners need someone to help them see.

Gunnar’s way of teaching is grounded in experience, curiosity and simple practical progress. He does not believe that great learning comes from making photography feel more complicated than it needs to be. He believes small shifts matter.

Where you stand matters. What you notice matters. What you choose to wait for matters. What you reflect on afterwards matters.

His approach is not about becoming the loudest photographer on the sideline or owning the most expensive camera. It is about learning the craft. Seeing the game differently. Capturing moments more intentionally. Finding the story around the game. And enjoying the process of getting better.

You are standing there with the camera ready. The game moves fast. The action goes one way, the story appears somewhere else, and by the time you react, it is already gone. That can feel frustrating, especially when it is your child, your team, your club or a moment you really cared about.

I teach this, not to turn everyone into a professional sports photographer, but to help more people come home from a game with photos that feel alive. Photos that show effort, emotion, pride, disappointment, focus, joy, teamwork and growth.

Photos that mean something.

Sports photography is challenging. It should be. Sport is fast, messy and full of moments you cannot control. But you can learn to see more. You can learn to prepare better. You can learn to make clearer choices.

And you can improve.
